THE CHURCHILL SOCIETY

London.

What greater tragedy can there be

than is presented by the spectacle of a child

whose life prospects and hopes are smashed at the very outset of its existence?

Winston Churchill.

______________

The whole theme of motherhood and family life

with those sweet affections which illuminate it

must be the fountain spring of present and future survival.

Dear Members and Friends

I apologise for the lateness of the Society's New Year Message. I have had a long period in hospital in the autumn and am only now able to catch up with society business.

Firstly I am proud to inform you that our visitors in 2004 exceeded 4 million - most of them being young people visiting the SCHOOLS AND YOUNG PEOPLE - WHO WAS CHURCHILL? pages.

The society's web site, when started (now nearly 10 years ago) was a constant source of amazement to us to receive e mails from so many remote countries. Now it is so commonplace we think nothing of it. How things have changed for the better!

People are always praising the web site for the quality of its text and the absence of commercialism. But costs are always escalating and the Society is still being heavily subsidized. With so many visitors we could take commercial advertisements on the web site but much prefer not to so as to ensure our complete independence. Please continue to support us so that this policy can be a permanent feature of the society's web pages.

and is entitled

Neighbours from Hell!

The new politics of behaviour.

'A study of the causes of the rise and rise of anti-social behaviour'

It is very difficult to understand why this very able politician who enjoys all party respect for his immense expertise on Pensions and Social Services does not occupy a very senior cabinet ministerial post.

I refer to two other events during the last year - one is the BBC Greatest Briton Award:-

For fuller details.

When a toddler in 1932, a member has informed us he had set of these building blocks.

The BBC will not reveal how much profit from telephone charges it made from the programme 'The Greatest Briton' or how much the above cost to make: how the 'artist ?' was selected, and why he had to have his staff 'computer create' his 'ideas' when such toys are commonplace. I am told that today such blocks are used by psychiatrists in testing backward children's mental abilities.

The other notable event was the installation in St Paul's Cathedral of the magnificent gates in honour of Sir Winston.

I quote from the Daily Telegraph.

St Paul's captures spirit of Churchill in steel

By Caroline Davies

(Filed: 30/11/2004)

The challenge was to capture the spirit of Sir Winston Churchill - not in words, nor in stone, but in steel. Yesterday, as St Paul's Cathedral unveiled a new memorial to Britain's wartime leader, they Ire confident they had achieved just that.

The eight-metre long Winston Churchill Memorial Screen, a bold but intricate set of gates forged in steel and bronze, stretches across the central axis of the Crypt. It cost £260,000 pounds (paid for anonymously) and took 10 craftsmen 7,000 hours to make and install.
