The Churchill Society

The United States stand at this moment at the summit of the world.

I rejoice that this should be so.

Let them act up to the level of their power and their responsibility,

not for themselves but for all men in all lands,

and then a brighter day may dawn upon human history.

Winston Churchill.

Tyranny is our foe,

whatever trappings or disguise it wears,

whatever language it speaks,

be it external or internal,

we must forever be on our guard,

ever mobilised, ever vigilant,

always ready to spring at its throat.

Winston Churchill.

To the multitudes thronging streets of cities all over the globe in protest against the war we ask .....

"Why did you not protest years ago about Saddam Hussein's cruelties to his countrymen - nor do so even today ?

It is odious that governments should seek to maintain their rule

otherwise than by free unfettered elections by the mass of the people.

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed,

says the Constitution of the United States.

This must not evaporate in swindles and lies

propped up by servitude and murder.

Winston Churchill.

It could be argued that by your actions you strengthen Saddam's resolve and that this has already caused many deaths.

Criticism is easy;

achievement is more difficult.

Winston Churchill.

Are you not thoughtlessly doing Saddam's work for him and making the work of the coalition forces even more difficult ?

The truth is incontrovertible.

Panic may resent it, ignorance may deride it, malice may distort it,

but there it is.

Winston Churchill.

The President of the USA and our Prime Minister have had heaped upon them over the last three months, hostility of an intensity equal to that endured by Churchill during the years he warned about the threat of Hitler. It is as difficult for them as it was for Churchill, to bring home to people the terror that tyrants like Hussein would inflict if allowed to remain in power.

There is a tide in the affairs of men,

Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life

Is bound in shallows and in miseries

William Shakespeare

Julius Caesar

To argue for UN inspectors to be allowed more time, or to wait further for a second UN resolution, was to miss the tide, both psychologically, seasonally, and militarily.

Out of intense complexities...intense simplicities emerge.

Winston Churchill.

Terrorists the world over have observed the results of the UK and USA governments' appeasement of the IRA. Terrorist leaders can never give up power because they fear their own murder. The only argument they comprehend is force

Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities

because it is the quality which guarantees all others.

Winston Churchill.

To argue as so many do, that the war is all about oil, is to forget who lit and who put out the oil well fires of the Gulf War. The Americans had they desired, could have found many sound reasons for remaining in control of those wells. That they did not, gives the lie to those who claim that America wants to control the region.

Yes, oil flows are falling world-wide and will continue to fall, but there will be no shortage for many years yet, and in any event oil, like coal, will be superseded by far cleaner energy.

But in the long run - believe me, for I know -

the action of the United States will be dictated,

not by methodical calculations of profit and loss,

but by moral sentiment,

and by that gleaming flash of resolve

which lifts the hearts of men and nations,

and springs from the spiritual foundations of human life itself.

Winston Churchill.

Whilst the UN remains incapable of policing terrorist regimes; then the Allies must do so. For freedom from terrorism to be achieved, the Allies must identify and take into custody the ring leaders. The very nature of today's weapons justifies pre-emptive force to disarm tyrants.

What therefore is the cause of so many Muslim families loathing the West?
Until we answer truthfully there will be no peace.

The whole theme of motherhood and family life,

with those sweet affections which illuminate it,

must be the fountain spring of present and future survival.

Winston Churchill.
